The mental toughness of employees – a key towards the organisation’s good health

The present period of insecurity in a way puts on trial the toughness and resilience of every individual, as well as of the business organisations. The pandemic makes us face an unprecedented social isolation, a disorganisation of our social relationships and familiar daily routine, a limitation of our experience to the level of the ‘present moment’. We are growing increasingly unclear about the duration of the crisis, as well as its effects; no reference points from our past are available that we can rely upon to plan and use as a secure basis for the present, as well as the period after the crisis.

The crisis affects our psyche and leads to conditions of frustration and confusion; stress and anxiety; great insecurity; fear; sadness; loneliness; anger and conflicts in our inner and outer world. These worrying and traumatic experiences are often thought to be too personal and because of that, unrelated to corporate life. In reality, though, some of the effects caused by them include greater stress levels, increased absence from work, professional ‘burnout’ and high levels of turnover.

Because of that our CATRO team, together with a team of psychologists and therapists, created a version of an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) adapted to an online environment. EAP is an instrument used by several leading global companies that includes various measures for improving employees’ wellbeing. It can serve as a supporting mechanism both during, and especially after the end of the state of emergency.

In the context of the present needs, we called that programme ‘A step forward! Beyond the fears, towards a new start!’, which supports employees both on an individual and group level. The programme includes the following package of activities:

  • Interactive webinars on topics related to the challenges of the state of emergency and the current crisis:
      Managing the stress, anxiety and ‘burnout’ at the time of crisis - the step from the usual state of heightened activity to a complete blockage;
      How to keep our integrity as leaders in the time of crisis - regaining the feeling of resilience and ‘realistic optimism’;
      Hope and orientation at a situation of crisis - how to transform fear into passion and frustration into curiosity;
      The change – crossing the boundary of the unknown - beyond the fears, towards a new perspective.

  • Individual meetings offering psychological support according to the needs of the employees:
      Up to 3 meetings/sessions per employee within the term of effect of the programme, which aim to establish a level of security and effectiveness;
      Up to 60 min. duration of individual sessions - online access between 8.00 and 20.00;
      A rich choice of specialists in different psychological paradigms: psychodynamic; psychodrama; gestalt therapy; positive psychotherapy; existential consulting; transactional analysis, NLP, coaching.

The programme ‘A step forward!’ will help you and your employees to answer two important questions that are becoming increasingly relevant in times of crisis and insecurity:

  • Who am I ‘here and now’ – ways to deal with stress and anxiety and to convert them in a healthy way in times of crisis.

The true consequences of a crisis usually become apparent only after the crisis is gone. The longer it continues, the greater the damage to our psychological wellbeing (the so-called posttraumatic stress, depression and somatic problems).

That is why it is important already at the time of crisis to be equipped with knowledge and techniques for healthy coping with stress and anxiety without ignoring or being overwhelmed by them; to be aware of the possibilities and ways to recover and regain the feeling of control; to make use of the possibilities to personally affect that what depends on us.

  • Who will I be tomorrow? – preparation for change and taking a step towards the unknown beyond the crisis.

The crisis is a time for change – from the old towards the new. Change is usually accompanied by anxiety and resistance towards it, because of the insecurity and lack of clarity that is brings. The crisis affects our identity and our feeling of belonging. The suffering and anxiety born out of a crisis are often connected to our loss of our old self that we knew so well and the necessity to create a new identity so we can move forward.

Main benefits of the programme ‘A step forward!’:

    Reducing the anxiety and regaining the feeling of control - through techniques for overcoming stress and anxiety; for adapting or building new models of functioning (physical, psychological, social) under the conditions of strict limitations; for actualising personal resources and rediscovering hidden strengths and possibilities;
    Adapting to change and regaining the feeling of direction and control of individual sessions - through exploring the inner world; getting to know the fears and the values hidden behind them; re-evaluating and revising old beliefs and convictions; creating new coping models; working through inner conflicts brought forward by the crisis; reflecting on the personal importance of the crisis; bringing the past in order and optimising the present; regaining the identity to face tomorrow.
For whom is the programme intended?

The present crisis affects every single one of us in a different way, as well as every organisation – on financial, operational and human level. The programme addresses most of all the needs of small and medium enterprises, whose capacity to deal with the challenges of the health and economic crisis is more limited.

That is why we believe that the present programme ‘A step forward!” could assist them in their efforts to retain their employees and build their mental toughness, which will inevitably lead to discovering solutions for a more successful exit of the crisis.

When can you make use of the programme?

The webinars and the individual sessions are intended for the period of 15.05.2020 – 31.08.2020 so that the employees can be supported during and after the state of emergency.
